Reef City Win in a Thriller

The Reef City Roller Girls season got off to a flying start on Saturday April 14 as the girls took to the track for the first time against the Mackay City Roller Maidens at the Cairns Recreation Centre. In front of a record crowd, the girls certainly didn't disappoint, putting on the hard hits and wowing the audience with a great display of roller derby.

The visitors, Mackay City Roller Maidens came into the bout with only three previous games under their belt, having lost two girls to sickness during the week, MCRM was determined to put up a fight and they did. From the get go, it was evident that this was going to be a hard fought battle as MCRM quickly racked up the points with some superb jamming.

Reef City kept up the determination and clawed back the points with some skillful jamming from Dirty Birdy, LamBikini and Lethal Von Smack to narrow the deficit 23 to 33, 10 minutes into the first period.

A few minutes later, Reef City suffered devistating back to back blows as the jammers were sent to the penalty box in quick succession, giving MCRM the upperhand as they fired out in front with a 53 to 32 lead.

Reef City picked themselves back up and some awesome jamming from 9.mmel, Dirty Birdy and Manslaughda brought the scores within reach, RCRG trailing 41 to 54 with around 10 minutes left in the first period.

With the minor penalty count starting to add up and frustration evident, MCRM got the better of RCRG and raced to a half time score of 78 to 54.

During half time the crowd was entertained by the fantastic Cairns High Bulldogs Cheersquad.

Whatever coach Marty Score-Crazy said to the girls in the locker room at half time must have fired them up as Manslaughda and LamBikini came firing out of the blocks to get the score back within reach.

MCRM kept up their fight, putting on the points and shooting out to a 116 to 76 lead.

Shortly after a mammoth power jam by Manslaughda with a depleated, penalty ridden MCRM saw the score come back within reach to 91 to 116.

With 10 minutes to go the score again narrowed with RCRG trailing 101 to 116 and then, LamBikini with a massive hit on MCRM's Ho Canada was expelled from the bout for dangerous play. MCRM was down to 9 players and RCRG down to 12.

With the crowd getting behind Reef City the scores leveled at 120 all and the atmosphere was electric. With 5 minutes to go, a couple of precision jams from MCRM had them claw back the lead 130 to 120.

Some impressive jamming from 9.mmel and Dirty Birdy brought the score within reach 128 to 135 as the clock ticked down with under 3 minutes to go. A quick power jam from RCRG got the score within reach 133 to 135 with just under 30 seconds to go, RCRG executed a team timeout to stop the clock.

The final jam of the night saw RCRG Captain 9.mmel, along with some impressive defensive work from the RCRG blockers, pull off a well timed apex jump to put on 5 points and seal the win for RCRG. The final score 138 to 135.
