Saturday May 7th saw the beginning of the Reef City Rollergirls' first full season of competitive bouting, kicking off 2011 with their first intra-league bout at the Cairns Recreation Centre, Manunda, Cairns.

This bout was the first of many, unveiling RCRG's two brand-spanking new home teams- the Cane Sugars and the Monsoon Maidens, complete with all new line-ups and kick-arse uniforms. This first home bout was the perfect opportunity for RCRG to showcase roller derby in the Cairns region, and bring much-deserved attention to this amazing sport.

With roller derby being a spectator's sport, the crowd queueing outside the Rec Centre further fuelled the atmosphere as to what was to become an adrenaline-charged, action-packed night of rough and tumble.

The Cane Sugars came out strong, lead by their captain, Beth Adder, and managed to hold their lead through the entire bout, eventually achieving victory with an impressive 203 to 140. The Monsoon Maidens, captained by Malice'N'Mayhem kept up the fight, proving they're a force to be reckoned with with their never-say-die attitude and guts.

Big hits were a regular occurrence, spills were commonplace and the jammers showcased their skills and thrilled the grand stands.

The masses were entertained at half-time by the Reef City Roller Brats, as well as local musical outfit, Boom Bap Collective and DJ Scott.

The night was a huge success, with many skaters competing in their first ever bout, as well as many of the spectators witnessing a roller derby bout for the first time. Post bout, enthusiasm and support were infectious and vast amounts of interest was generated within the Cairns community, which can only lead to bigger and better things for the Reef City Rollergirls.

And they'll need it, with the Northern Tropical Thunder Tournament going down on the Queens Birthday weekend in June (11th, 12th and 13th)! The RCRG's will be taking on the Towns Villains, the Terrortorians as well as a combined team from Gladstone and the Mackay City Roller Maidens. Be there. Support your local roller derby!
